# Asakiri Studio

> A local-first desktop app for building deep, structured language courses.

Asakiri Studio is a local-first course editor. You build lessons, reusable content,
exercises, and media on your own machine, and the whole course stays in a single
project folder you control.

These docs cover getting started and how a course is stored, using the content-first
data model.

## What it is

* **Local-first.** Content and media live in a project folder on your disk, not in an account or a cloud service.
* **Content-first.** Reusable records are the source of truth; lessons and exercises reference them.
* **Portable.** A course is plain files, so you can move it, back it up, or put it under version control.

<Note>
  Asakiri Studio is in alpha, but the course format is settled: `asakiri-course` version 1,
  published with [JSON Schemas](https://github.com/AsakiriLingo/asakiri-studio/tree/main/schemas/asakiri-course/v1).
  See [Build on Asakiri](/build/overview) to read or write courses yourself, and
  [Reference lifecycle](/data-structure/reference-lifecycle) for what is still deferred.
